scotlandart.com case study

scotlandart.com have two art galleries; one in Edinburgh and one in Glasgow. They offer original art work only - they do not work with prints. Through their web site they sell art work to customers all over the world.

Galaxy Technology were approached by scotlandart.com a couple of years ago and asked if we could produce a system for them whereby they could maintain a database of artwork in their gallery that would be reflected onto a website. They had received a number of quotes for complex systems requiring the use of an online database and active server pages. We felt that for the volume of enquiries they would receive at any one time a simpler system could be put in place using JavaScript technology.

Database and Website

We were given the job and produced a Microsoft Access database for them that resides on one of their local machines. This gives them a single location for entering stock information. Whenever they require they publish the database to the web via our FTP component (File Transfer Protocol). This is all done at the click of a button and requires no expertise from their staff. We produced the web site using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You can view it at http://www.scotlandart.com

Inter office communication

Since then we have linked the two galleries by installing a Microsoft Terminal Server in the Glasgow gallery. This means that the Edinburgh gallery (or any member of staff when they are on the road) can connect to the Glasgow gallery securely and access the company stock database.

Hardware and Networking

We also deal with their hardware and networking needs and have so far built approximately 15 PCs for them.

Bespoke Applications

We have developed a number of bespoke applications for scotlandart.com in Visual C++ and Visual C# .NET. The most complex was a finance application that allows staff members to record sales details and will then generate the invoices in Excel.
